The pirate multiplayer sailing adventure game from Rare has reached its year-long Technical Alpha. However, Sea of Thieves has one last test phase before the game's scheduled launch early next year. And this time, it is open to everyone.
Rare's Techincal Alpha was announced way back in December of last year and has slowly expanded testers from a meager 1,000 to nearly 200,000. The final test phase will be open to everyone who signed up for the Sea of Thieves' Insider Program and will be given the opportunity to play early.
For those who are interested in trying out the game ahead of release, there is still time to register for the Insider Program, the cut-off date is December 1.
Before signing up, there are some details that should be known. You will have to sign an NDA before participating and will be available to people aged 18 and older. Also, you will need to have an Xbox Live account before playing on Windows 10, and an Xbox Live Gold membership will be needed for playing on the Xbox One.
My Take - This is a very smart move and this type of thing is so common. Seeing an open technical test ahead of release is something that has been popularized by games with a multiplayer focus. Most recently, it was used for the multiplayer-only Overwatch and that allowed for that game to explode ahead of launch. These tests have worked time and time again, hopefully it does the same for Rare.
